Linux ရဲ့ UI ကြီးက ပိန်းလွန်းတယ် သုံးစားမရဘူးလို့ ချစ်သူကောင်မလေးက ပြောလာတဲ့ အတွက် Matthias Ettrich က ၁၉၉၆ ခုနှစ်မှာ Common Desktop Environment (CDE) ကို ရေးသားပေးခဲ့တယ်။ CDE ဆိုတဲ့ နာမည်က ရှိပြီးသားဖြစ်နေလို့ Cool/Kool က K ကိုယူပြီး K Desktop Environment (KDE) အဖြစ်အမည်ပေးခဲ့ပါတယ်။
အခုဆို Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, Microsoft Windows, နဲ့ OS X တွေမှာ အသုံးပြုနိုင်ပါတယ်။
KDE သုံးထာတဲ့ နာမည်ကြီး ၂ ခုကို ပြောရမယ် ဆိုရင်တော့ Kubuntu နဲ့ openSUSE ပဲ ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ KDE သုံးထားတဲ့ (Linux) Distro ပေါင်း ၁၀၄ ခုခန့်ရှိပါတယ်။
လူသုံးတော်တော် များတဲ့ Debian ကို Ian Murdock ဆိုတဲ့ ပုဂ္ဂိုလ်က ၁၉၉၃ ခုနှစ် သြဂုတ်လ ၁၆ ရက်နေ့မှာ စတင်မိတ်ဆက်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။ Debra Lynn ဆိုတဲ့ သူရဲ့ ရည်းစားနာမည်က Deb နဲ့ သူနာမည် အစ Ian ကိုပေါင်းစပ်ပြီး Debian လို့ ခေါ်ခဲ့တာပါတဲ့။
Windows မှာ .exe တွေသုံးသလိုပဲ သူ့ OS နဲ့ အဲဒီ Debian တွေကို အခြေခံတဲ့ OS တွေမှာ Installer ဖိုင်တွေကို .deb နဲ့သုံးပါတယ်။ လက်ရှိ နာမည်ကြီးနေတဲ့ ubuntu တို့ Raspberry Pi (Raspbian) တို့လည်း Debian တွေပါပဲ။
အခုချိန်မှာ Debian Base OS ပေါင်း ၁၄၄ ခု ကျော်ကျော် ရှိပါတယ်။
